It feels like they travel forever over that long paved curve with only shadows below them, dark water hidden by the same fog they're driving through, until finally the end of the bridge emerges as the road curves on through shadowy hills.

And it's changed, too. Johnnie feels it coming before it hits - the vibration from the road, ringing in his ears, becomes rougher as the pavement changes to something poor, under-maintained. Johnnie looks up, then around, as he keeps driving - the street lights look decayed, but they exist, flickering and pale.]
