I sure like the feeling of an endless road
[A few hours of open road makes for easygoing fun. It's great to be traveling again, and the feeling of Chrissy leaning up against his back, holding on tight while he whips ahead on a wide-open freeway through the pitch black of night is like nothing else. The last time they were racing up and down this freeway, they were on the way to go burn a bunch of people's lives down - but now that's hours back, back with the rest of the city. They've left the lights and have nothing to look at but the pavement in Johnnie's headlight, the glimpses of stars shining weakly through hazy clouds, and occasionally an oncoming car.
Johnnie hasn't exactly been trying to tune in to his senses or abilities or whatever it is he has - he's just been cruising, letting the night go by, enjoying their plunge northward without a care or a thought. So it is deeply irritating when the pavement quickly fades to a well-worn dirt track that almost tosses him and Chrissy to the ground, and it takes all of his skills to get the front wheel under control and to slow down before they hit a rock that really might launch them into the nearest alfalfa field. Or whatever it is that's here, whenever they've found themselves. Somewhere pre-freeway. Boo.
But there are a few lights ahead, and he did need a stop to pee, so, fuck it.]
Well, shit. Y'know, I dunno exactly where we are. Last sign said San Jose was still fuckin' hours off. You good? That was kinda shaky.
[As long as this dirt road stays packed, they can drive it, but it's going to be slow. Good thing they're almost to somewhere.]

On the other, way more important hand, he is a good driver. He's a great driver. Fuck yeah he'll get them somewhere else.]
Just you wait, baby girl. I'll get us somewhere new an' perfect. Better every time.
[There is no way he can guarantee that, and having said it, in fact, nearly guarantees he'll take them somewhere terrible. But! He's gonna try his fucking best!
Snickering, he yawns despite himself and throws an arm over his eyes. Sleep is about to come extra-easy.]
no subject
Mmmph. It feels like I'm cooking.
[But she's not, she's just really warm. That's summer for you.]
Johnnie?
[Her head turns to glance over beside her to see if he's still there.]
no subject
Sort of. The novelty of this place is wearing off fast. And he could eat again, though at least he's not starving thanks to their meal earlier. He's not shooting at things this time, not wanting to wake Chrissy early, but instead he's poking around in the creek to see if there are things like clams or crawfish there. Are there clams in freshwater creeks? Would he know what to do with a crawfish if he found one? Probably not, but it makes him feel like he's a kid again, playing in the ditch that is the LA river during the rainy season.
He hears her call his name and looks over toward her and the bike.]
Just over here! You sleep okay?
no subject
[She jumps up to her feet and stretches before rubbing the sleep from her eyes. Once they're clear she's able to see him down by the creek, and the sight of him looking around puts a smile on her face. Sometimes he makes it easy to see what he must have been like as a little kid. It's pretty darn endearing.]
Did you find anything?
[The question is called out as she jogs over to join him, feet bare as she hops into the creek. The water feels nice and makes her gasp in delight, but she's not too eager to stand around and play in it for long. As much as she enjoys the peace here, it's starting to get old and she's ready to move on. So as soon as she crouches down to pick up a rock out of the water she's throwing it back in.]
Maybe we'll find a diner or something to stop at if we head out and end up somewhere way in the future!
no subject
[Shouldn't take long to gather up their stuff and hop into a new time. He grabs her for a quick kiss, then grins as he pulls away to go get his shoes back on.]
Anyway, if we end up back even further in time, we could eat a dinosaur! You want dinosaur steaks for breakfast? Could be the only people who ever did.
[For now he will have a cigarette for pre-breakfast, in lieu of anything more sustaining. He pulls on his jacket, lights one up, and stuffs his lighter and the empty pack back in his pocket. He'd toss that, normally, but hell they might need a firestarter later.]
Hey, next city though, let's get us some instant coffee too, 'cause if we end up in a time like this again I wanna be able to have some. That an' more snacks.
no subject
[That's the priority on this trip after all. She's grinning as she bounds out of the water and jogs up to their stuff to start getting it all together. Between the two of them they're ready in no time, and she's quick to get on her shoes and make sure her jacket is on.
It's just a matter of walking the bike back to whatever of the path they were on before that they can still find, and then getting on so he can get them going.]
If you get us outta here in five minutes or less, I'll reward you in the bathroom wherever we stop for breakfast.
[Hopefully that's incentive enough, because she's pretty sure a giant bug she's never seen before just landed on his shoulder. She brushes it off before he can notice it, and glances back behind them as she watches it fly away. What the heck was that thing?]
no subject
I'm gonna hold you to that. Five minutes, let's go!
[She better get on fast, because he's in a hurry!
It is definitely not easy to get up to top speeds on the little footpath, and when he does go fast it's hard to maintain them, but he relishes the challenge of trying anyway. They fly past that little camp on the hill, probably scaring those people as they roar past. Trees, bushes, river all become - well, less of a blur than he'd like, but blurry nonetheless. He's guessing he's going about 40, top, not 80 or more but it's fine it's what they have and he won't waste time thinking about it. He just settles into the road.
Time slips, and this time around he has no control over it. Maybe it's the fault of the road, he can't tell. All he knows is that he's back on the highway as the landscape shifts around him - a good highway and a busy one at that. It's late afternoon and San Francisco commuters pack the road as they make the slow climb up the bridge over the Petaluma River, and Johnnie stares, eyes wide at their surroundings, then whoops with a fist in the air.]
How's that for five minutes!
[Might take them more than five minutes to get into town though with all this traffic, but he weaves through it as well as he can.]
no subject
You're getting really good at this, babe!
[It's hard to contain her pride in what he can do, so she lets out another whoop that trails off into a howl, and she laughs as she raises both fists into the air. They're getting so strong it's impossible not to be loud about it. It feels like she's bursting at the seams with pride and wants the entire city they've just been dumped into to know about it.]
There's a lot of traffic, but we'll just weave through them. No problem!
[They pass by a family in their car as she says it, and they honk. Chrissy laughs and bares her teeth and growls. It would be nice if she had an airhorn or something. Then she could just loudly honk at anyone that gets in their way. As they steer to go between two cars, she can see one of them has a big TV screen in the console.]
The cars all look so modern. There's a TV build inside that one! We must be in the future again.
no subject
[All perfect ideas to him, but meanwhile he's zig-zagging between cars, around a bus, ignoring traffic lights entirely once they hit their first one and just zipping through the intersection when he sees a gap.
Apparently some cops noticed because they put their siren on, but there's no way they'll catch up with this many cars on the road that have no good way to move over. Sucks to be cops.
They pass a few remaining orchards, and then it's strip mall city on the outskirts of town. Cafes and auto shops and all kinds of suburban bullshit with their sleek futuristic signs - and hey, a taquerÃa, so at least this is some kind of decent civilization.
Following signs, he turns off the highway and heads for downtown, which means crossing the river again as well as railroad tracks. Then it's all old classy buildings, brick and bronze, right next to shiny new sleek things.]
That's better, outta that fuckin' traffic hell. That was just as bad as LA at peak hours, man, can't believe how many cars there are, I thought we were in fuckin' rural wine country. Hey, there's a barbecue place.
[He's looking for food. Barbecue for breakfast sounds kind of fun. But there are easily a dozen restaurants here, things he's never even heard of. Thai? Vietnamese? Right next to some actual breakfast nook that looks closed at this hour. Several bars, a couple burger places that look kind of high-end, a Middle Eastern shwarma place -]
Oh man, that smells good, whatever that is.
no subject
[Barbecue is fine, anything around them is fine. She's pretty flexible when it comes to food these days. And the smell in the air is really good. Her head turns toward the shwarma place, and she gives a nod over toward it even though Johnnie can't see.]
The future has so many people. They're everywhere. That Thai place over there has a line out the door.
[Which means they definitely aren't going there. Her stomach is definitely growling now though, and it sounds off over the engine, which makes her laugh as she presses against him a little tighter like it will shut her body up.]
no subject
Well, they're all missin' out over there! This is the place to be!
[And it is busy, even if not totally packed. If it was completely empty maybe he would have second thoughts - maybe. He lets his stomach guide him and his stomach says eat here.
He hops off the bike and goes to get the door for Chrissy, and is immediately mesmerized by the rotating racks of meat behind the kitchen counter. As he watches, one of the cooks shaves a long section off onto a plate with a huge butcher's knife.]
Holy shit.
no subject
Oh, I think this must be the extra large or something.
[The guy laughs at her and shakes his head, and pulls out a cup double the size to show her.]
We don't have extra large. This is the large. That's the medium.
[What in the hell do people in the future drink, buckets of soda? They must, because as Johnnie pays and she goes through the restaurant to find a table she notes every table has large cups. In fact, someone is finishing off their large and is going to the machine at the back to fill it up again.
The future is amazing when it comes to soda.
She eagerly hurries to the back to fill her cup with Coke, and finds a table in the corner that's perfect for two. When Johnnie comes to sit down with her she's enjoying her drink just like she belongs in the future. There's no limit to refills here. She can drink 96 ounces of Coke if she wants to!]
no subject
This place is fuckin' crazy. Makes up for payin' for a month's worth of bills just to get breakfast.
[Does it really? No, but pawning off their jewelry will, so he isn't going to worry about it. He expects it now anyway.
Their orders come quickly. It's pretty easy to assemble a wrap full of spiced meat, vegetables, and the most garlicky sauces possible, plus a basket of fries for the table at Johnnie's request. Good thing, because he's hungry and doesn't want to waste his whole stomach space on a ton of coke.
He winds up with yogurt sauce on his nose somehow in the process as he wolfs down several bites at once, then slouches back in his chair, immediately contented. This place was a good choice.]
Man, I wonder if we got one a' these back in LA somewhere! We got everything. I dunno any fuckin' Arabic or whatever this is restaurants but there's gotta be one.
no subject
We'll have to look around the city when we get back. And if we don't find one, we'll just force someone to open something!
[That's so ridiculous that she laughs, but pops a few fries into her mouth before her giggles can get too out of control.]
Oh, and I bet we'll find a pawn shop somewhere nearby. And a grocery store so we can stock up on some food. Whatever year this is probably has really good Pop Tarts.
no subject
[Future guns is what his head goes to first, since he's gotten a taste for his pistol and would love something even better next time the cops come around - or things more annoying than cops, like Kennel Club freaks and their dogs. But Future Guns, as cool as they look in his head, are probably worth more than their stash of trinkets. What a shame.
Oh well. He has shwarma.]
Like... Like I dunno what we'd want. Maybe we go walk around here after we eat, see what they even have. I think we've been in this same time before though, right?
[He indicates with a thumb toward the table next to them, where two of the four people there are poking at those glowing pocket-sized screens they saw once somewhere east of California.]
no subject
[In fact, it feels like they stand out because they're the only people without those little screens. Something about them strikes a core memory, and she laughs a little as she gets a sip from her drink.]
Do you remember when we went to try and get the cosmic ash? I can't remember what city it was in but there was that security guard guy. Oh gosh, he was the first person I ever shot and beat up.
[She happily sighs, resting her elbow on the table and her chin in the palm of her hand. At the next table over, two women glance over at them.]
He had a little screen thing, remember? But it only played music. I wonder what I did with that thing.
no subject
[That was somewhere in rural Georgia. He remembers that part, if not the name of the town. He remembers a lot about what happened that day. He hopes Z'Oiseau and his associates, in that time and in that version of the universe, are suffering.
Back to eating for a while then, quietly but not contemplatively - he's not thinking back on that episode with the cosmic ash because he doesn't exactly care to. He's just enjoying his dinner, with the occasional pause for some fries or a slurp of his giant drink.]
Man, I'm barely gonna be able to finish this thing. Me! It's so much food! Mama always said I had a hollow leg to put it all in but this is gonna fuckin' fill me right up.
no subject
[She laughs through a mouthful of food, and shakes her head as she eats and enjoys as much as she can of her food. He's right though, it is a lot. She isn't sure she'll be able to finish all of hers. That's fine, she doesn't need to eat until she's sick or anything.]
I guess things are just bigger in the future. And we're two little people, babe. It's too much food for us to handle.
[Laughing again, she pushes her meal aside but pulls her coke in for more. Future coke is great. At the next table over, those women look at them before glancing back at the devices they're glued to.]
I wanna get one of those screens before we go.
[She's deciding if she wants to tell those ladies just to hand theirs over or not.]
no subject
After finishing what he can, Johnnie nudges his plate aside. There isn't enough left to be worth taking along. And he looks over his shoulder, then, at the people and screens again nearby.]
They must be somethin' real good. We'll get you one. Can't wait to see what they actually do.
[Bugging people in the restaurant is one option, but bugging people outside sounds better to him. Especially drunk people once the sun goes down. Easy targets.
Satisfied, he stands and eats one last fry just because they're there, and then he makes his way slowly toward the door just in case there's a device that looks unattended enough to walk off with without being noticed. But that kind of sleight of hand isn't typically his best talent. He's too loud to be a pickpocket. Better just get to the bike.]
no subject
Let's find a pawn shop and maybe they can tell us what those little screens are. Or they'll have some I can swipe while you sell to them.
[They did that before and it worked out okay. She's getting better and better at stealing every stop they make.]
Do you know what I just remembered though?
no subject
About to ask what she just remembered, he pauses, then a grin takes over. Oh yeah. He remembers too.]
Yeah. I do know. An' nobody's gonna look twice if we gotta use that bathroom since we were just in there.
[Or if they do, who gives a fuck? Not him. He pulls her in for one more kiss, then laughs as he steps away and heads back inside, heading for the back corner where the bathrooms are.]
no subject
I'm really glad you remembered.
[And that's all the sweetness he gets before she's moving forward, pushing him against the wall as she forcefully kisses him. There's a time and place for sweet and gentle, and this sure isn't it.]
no subject
And then he turns the tables, giving her a firm shove to press her back to the sink, then lifts her up onto it. Hopefully it supports her weight - she's small, she said it herself. He stands between her knees and kisses, mixing teeth and tongue against her lips and throat while his hands grope beneath her shirt.]
Whatcha in the mood for, baby girl?
[He doesn't need to ask, really. She's showing him. But he likes to hear her talk, likes to hear her tell him her fantasies.]
no subject
I want you to fuck my mouth, baby.
[The kiss she gives him is all teeth, sharp and ending with a nip to his lip.]
Then I want you to make me wait until later to get to come.
[There's just something about choosing to be used by him in a dirty bathroom that really gets her going. She'll potentially examine that later, but she likes to think it's because she's giving him power and control over her and knows he'll never abuse it. It's a safe form of loss of control, and that's really hot to her.
The only thing better than asking for it is begging, and so she leans in with her mouth to his ear to plead with him.]
You'll let me do that for you, won't you? Please?
no subject
Baby girl, you are too damn perfect, you know that?
[And she's going to have to get down from that sink where he put her or she'll never reach. Snickering, he gives her a tug, encouraging her to wrap her legs around his waist as he pulls her off and then sets her down with a laugh.]
Gonna have to be real damn quick about this though, 'cause if someone comes in here they're gonna chase us out.
[One more shove to push her down to the floor - gently, on the shoulder, but firm enough to assert some control, before he tugs his pants down and strokes himself a couple times just to make her watch before he cups her head in his hands and thrusts forward into her mouth.]
